Job Summary

WHO is looking for a suitable candidate for the position of Communication Officer. 

The incumbent shall:

  1. Monitor and analyze the news, coverage and updates of the country's mainstream media in the fields related to the health and WHO work, and prepare periodical analytical clipping reports for the management; solicit respective information from Sub-Offices and monitor submission;
  2. In consultation with supervisor, identify and prioritize topics within the work of WHO that should be promoted through media communications; initiate, develop and actively contribute to production of communications materials using the most effective methods (audio-visual, photos, television, radio, multimedia presentations, videos, etc);
  3. Draft WHO messages, media talking points, OP-EDs and other types of media supporting documents to facilitate dissemination of WHO health messages to the public and other stake holder. Draft press releases, media backgrounders and position statements and organize all the media events such as press briefings, journalists' trips, interviews, photo exhibits, etc
  4. Provide technical support to the development, production and dissemination of relevant IEC materials to inform WHO staff, health partners and the general public on issues concerning WHO area of work;
  5. Establish and maintain a network of media contacts to disseminate relevant media products;
  6. Update CO's website as a media communications tool and monitor access, ensure use of guidelines and standards of the WHO;
  7. In collaboration with MAC/EMRO organize and facilitate communication capacity building training programs for the field staff on how to reach out to, and work effectively with, the media to promote the WHO role in emergency situations and relevant issues;
  8. Collect and adapt country specific training materials and communication guidelines for WHO staff working in humanitarian health.

Required Skills

Education

Essential: University degree in journalism, communications, international relations or social science. Desirable: Master degree in any of the above areas, studies or experience-based knowledge of communications techniques and media relations.

 

Experience

Essential: At least 3 years of experience as a journalist or in a media organization (television, radio and/or print), at national or international level, or in the organization involved in information and communications projects.

Desirable: Experience in planning and implementing media and communications projects, including the development of audio and visual materials and tools. Knowledge or understanding of WHO mandate and goals or experience in similar positions in the UN or NGOs.

 

Skills

  • Proven skills in the development and implementation of communications/media products, including relations with the press and media.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure while producing results.
  • Ability to "think out of the box" and to make innovative proposals as related to communication. Tact, discretion and diplomacy.
  • Expert knowledge of English.
  • Expert knowledge of Local Language.
